The two calculations are deliberately simple
The repair path divides the total repair quote by the number of years the user expects the appliance to remain useful after repair. The replacement path divides the replacement purchase price by the user’s expected years from the replacement. Both inputs must be positive, and the result is displayed as an annualised amount in AUD or EUR according to the record market.
If the two annualised amounts are within ten per cent, the interface says they are close and asks the user to consider other factors. That ten-per-cent threshold is a presentation rule for uncertainty, not a scientific finding. A lower displayed path means only that the user’s own numbers produced a lower annualised cost.
Safety and rights come before arithmetic
When the exact model record contains a recall match, the public calculator is locked and directs the reader to the official notice. Cost cannot override a recall. Visible fire, electrical, gas, refrigerant, flooding or mechanical hazards likewise require safe shutdown and qualified help rather than an online cost comparison.
Australian consumer guarantees may provide a repair, replacement or refund when a product fails to meet legal guarantees. The remedy depends on the circumstances and seriousness of the problem. Warranty expiry does not necessarily end those rights. The calculator is not legal advice and should not cause someone to pay for a remedy a supplier may be required to provide.
The lifespan inputs carry most of the uncertainty
A repairer may provide a clear quote, but expected years after repair are still uncertain. The failed component, availability of other ageing parts, prior maintenance, usage and repair quality can all affect the outcome. A new appliance lifespan is also uncertain and should not be copied from a marketing warranty or an unsupported category average.
Run more than one scenario when the decision is sensitive. A conservative repair case and conservative replacement case show how much the result depends on lifespan assumptions. If a small change flips the lower-cost path, the model is signalling uncertainty rather than a robust decision.
Important costs are currently excluded
The tool excludes future energy and water use, finance charges, installation, delivery, downtime, disposal, residual value and environmental impacts unless the user has already incorporated them into the entered totals. It also does not estimate repeat failures, parts availability or technician travel. Those exclusions are shown beside the inputs so the annualised result is not mistaken for whole-of-life cost.
Keeping a functioning product in use can support circular-economy goals by delaying replacement and conserving materials, but repair is not automatically safe, available or economical. DCCEEW describes repair, reuse and longer product life as circular-economy practices; the household decision still depends on evidence specific to the appliance and fault.
Privacy and evidence boundaries
The four calculator entries stay in the browser component and are not turned into a community report or model reliability claim. Lasting Index does not learn that a particular model costs a given amount to repair from these entries. Published source assertions and user-entered scenarios remain separate evidence types.

The result should support a documented decision, not hide the uncertainty behind one number.
